Deadly Detention
In collaboration with our investigative reporter and developer, we created a custom template to highlight our investigative pieces. This featured a slimmer navigation and presented the opportunity to build rebust customized overview landing pages.
Background
Like many start-up news organizations the Houston Landing uses Newspack, a templated service built on WordPress. When creating custom pages and infrastructure I had to work closely with our developer.
We ideated through multiple iterations, slacking back and forth as we hit road blocks in implementation. Finally, we built a WordPress capability that enabled us to create a sleek and immersive navigation, allowing us to connect different articles to one another, building out a mobile-friendly series experience.
Approach
Next, we created an overview page to highlight all of the articles within the series, giving them a place to live in a digestable format that highlighted the depth of the reporting.
While building this overview page, we prioritized keeping it mobile-friendly, creating a easy-to-follow cadence of information and exhibiting a searchable database of the nearly 200 Texans that lost their lives instead of getting the care they need.
